History of the Nissan Altima - Lewis Nissan

Falling between the Nissan Maxima and Sentra in the automaker’s lineup, the Nissan Altima sedan delivers fun-to-drive dynamics, a spacious and comfortable cabin, and modern technology, making it a top choice in the full-size sedan segment year after year.

The name “Altima” first appeared as a trim line of the Nissan Laurel mid-size sedan sold in Central America and the Caribbean prior to 1992. Beginning in 1993, Nissan discontinued its Stanza line, and replaced it with an all-new model called the Altima for the United States. The first Nissan Altima rolled off the assembly line in June of 1992 as a 1993 model. Demand quickly spiked, and Nissan expanded U.S. production from its facility in Smyrna, Tennessee to also include the automaker’s production plant in Canton Mississippi.

The first generation Altima was powered by Nissan's 150-horsepower straight-4 DOHC engine mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Immediately, the Altima was commended for its athletic handling and sporty demeanor.

The second generation Altima was introduced as a 1998 model. The interior saw significant updates, including a folding back seat, revised cup holders and glovebox, and depowered airbags.
The third generation was available from 2002 to 2006, bringing an entirely new platform, new styling, and extra space. The third generation was praised for being one of the best-handling and most powerful family sedans on the market.

In 2007, Nissan made the fourth generation Altima available. Again, this generation was built on a new platform. The Nissan D platform was smaller than its predecessor, but offered improved efficiency and an upgraded rear suspension. Packed with technology that was advanced for the time (including standard Smart Key), the Altima continued to set itself apart from the competition.
